Exercise Part 1-8

In NeuroPhysics Therapy (NPT), exercise is not merely about training muscles or improving cardiovascular capacity; it is understood as a living psychophysical system interacting with its environment. This comprehensive eight-part module challenges conventional fitness approaches by focusing on how the system perceives, organises, and responds to movement—physically, emotionally, and cognitively. By mastering these principles, you will learn to transition from enduring intensity to moving through it with an organised and resilient system.

Module Introduction

Exercise Training & Education by Ken Ware

“When the system is organised, exercise intensity is no longer something you endure… it becomes something you move through.”

The NeuroPhysics Treatment (NPT) Exercise Training & Education modules present a fundamentally different understanding of exercise, health, and human performance.

At its core, NPT does not view exercise as simply training muscles, improving “fitness,” or targeting isolated systems such as strength or cardiovascular capacity. Instead, exercise is understood as a living psychophysical system interacting with its environment. The critical question is not just what movement is being performed, but how the system perceives, organises, and responds to that movement — physically, emotionally, and cognitively.

This distinction is what separates NPT from conventional exercise approaches.

Accordion Content

To make these interactions observable and meaningful, NPT methodology reduces unnecessary “degrees of freedom” by placing the individual within stable, structured environments and clearly defined parameters. These include maintaining correct posture, using light loads, performing ultra-slow and seamless movements, preserving bilateral organisation, working with eyes closed where appropriate, and maintaining physical and emotional composure throughout.

These parameters are not arbitrary. They are designed to remove noise from the system, allowing hidden protective behaviours, perceptual errors, and overreactive defaults to become visible. Under these controlled conditions, exercise becomes far more than training — it becomes a precise method of assessment and system-wide refinement.

Students are introduced to key NeuroPhysics principles such as stable reference points, hemispheric balance, sensory-motor associative perceptual errors, and the role of structured “grids” in guiding and measuring change. These concepts provide a powerful framework for understanding how behaviour, perception, and physiology are interconnected and how they can be influenced in a predictable and meaningful way.

A key insight within NPT is that high performance in one domain does not necessarily reflect true system-wide robustness. In fact, over-specialisation can reduce adaptability.

For example, during a period where I was performing large volumes of high-intensity sprint training, I expected a light jog to be effortless. Instead, I struggled to complete a slow 1 km run, with my cardiovascular system overreacting and my quadriceps cramping unexpectedly. The experience was humbling, but it highlighted an important principle: a system can become highly efficient within one narrow demand while becoming less adaptable across broader conditions.

The same principle applies emotionally. When individuals become locked into rigid patterns of thought, fixed beliefs, or repetitive protective states, the system loses its even distribution of energy and information. As a result, it becomes increasingly sensitive to perturbation—where even minor challenges can provoke disproportionate reactions.

For this reason, NPT exercise methodology is not about simply increasing capacity. It is about developing organisation, adaptability, and control across a wide range of conditions.

This is achieved by helping individuals establish stable physical and emotional reference points throughout different phases of movement — during increasing load, decreasing load, transitions, and moments of uncertainty. The goal is not simply to tolerate stress, but to remain composed and organised as conditions change.

The advanced NPT programs build on this foundation by introducing controlled variability and perturbation. These are designed to test and strengthen the system’s ability to stabilise itself following disruption — a capacity that is directly transferable to real-world environments.

Ultimately, NPT exercise training develops systems that are not only stronger, but more adaptable, more resilient, and more capable of responding appropriately to the unpredictable nature of life.

This is not conventional exercise education.

It is a deeper exploration of how exercise can be used to observe, understand, and upgrade the way the human system functions as a whole.

Modules 1-4

Encompass the introduction to all of the exercises that are performed on NPT programmes 1-7.

The ultimate value and meaning of each exercise – the key parameters and terminology.

“Each module builds upon the last — not to add complexity, but to reveal it, organise it, and ultimately place it under your control.”

Module 5 – The Myth of “Cardio”

Rethinking the Cardiovascular Narrative

Challenge one of the most deeply ingrained concepts in the fitness industry. This module reframes “cardio exercise” as a misinterpreted construct and demonstrates that what matters is not the system being worked, but how the system perceives and responds to the work it is doing.

Module 6 – You and Your Program

Translating Principles into Daily Practice

A practical and accessible integration of the full NPT exercise framework. This module provides a clear, structured handout that helps clients understand their program, reinforcing consistency, ownership, and the transfer of these principles into real-world behaviour.

Module 7 – Advanced NeuroPhysics Programs

Building Robustness Through Variability

Move beyond controlled environments into dynamic, real-world application. This module introduces variability and perturbation to test and strengthen system resilience, adaptability, and the ability to remain organised under changing and unpredictable conditions.

Module 8 – Stretching Reconsidered

Debunking a Long-Held Assumption

A critical examination of stretching as it is commonly prescribed. This module challenges conventional beliefs and presents a NeuroPhysics-based understanding of why stretching may not achieve what it promises — and what should replace it.

Part 1: Exercise – Parameters and Key Terminologies

Accordion Content

  1. Name and identify the parameters used across all NeuroPhysics exercises.
  2. Name and identify key terminologies used in NeuroPhysics Programs and client sessions.

Part 6: Exercise – You and Your Program

Accordion Content

This module has a dual purpose.

YOU and YOUR PROGRAM is a handout style document that condenses and revises all of the rationale, core principles and the NPT exercise program development stages of the whole NPT exercise module for ease of reference for the student themselves and for graduates to refer to when they are moving their clients on through all the programs 1-7.

As well, the document itself may be provided in hard copy only to clients to take with them if they are training remotely with the graduate whose client they are maintaining contact with via Teams meetings, etc.

It provides good bedside-to-table reading and preparation for the graduate and the client for what is ahead.

The estimated completion time varies by topic and by individual study styles, reading and typing speeds, and native language. Completion time estimates range from a low of perhaps 12 hours for a few of the modules, to a high of perhaps 25-30 hours, depending on the module. All modules are presented in U.S. English.

The minimum score to pass individual assignments and tests is 80%. Successful completion of a module earns a Certificate of Completion from Neurotricional Sciences Education Pty. Ltd.

These terms and conditions (“Terms”) govern your conduct in connection with registering for the single module you have selected (broadly referred to as “the Program”). By registering for the Program, you acknowledge that you have read and accept these Terms. If you do not agree to the Terms, do not proceed.

A reference in the Terms to “we”, “us” or “our” is a reference to Neurotricional Sciences Education Pty Ltd ABN 27 162 445 829, trading as Ken Ware NeuroPhysics Therapy Training & Education.

“iCohere” refers to the iCohere Unified Learning System, a software platform for which Neurotricional Sciences Education Pty Ltd has a use license.

Part 7: Exercise – Advanced Programs

Accordion Content

Once the client has graduated from the NPT Exercise Program format and prescription of Programs 1-7, they then move onto the Advanced NPT exercises.

You will learn all of the value and meaning of ‘advanced programs’ 1-7 as well as the format and prescription of each program.

There is a time factor inclusion in each advanced program, and you will learn how to coach your client into remaining calm and composed while they have a degree of time pressure imposed upon them, as there is often in the real world.

You will consolidate your understanding of the importance of variability with exercise and how this application during exercise experiences assists us to remain robust and adapt fast to sudden unexpected changes in our real world.

Advanced NPT programs 1-7 increase and consolidate your understanding of ‘Multistability’ which was purposely discussed during your studies of NPT Programs 1-7 as a primary rationale and value of the whole NPT exercise programs 1-8.

Part 8: Exercise – Stretching Reconsidered

Accordion Content

Debunking a Long-Held Assumption

A critical examination of stretching as it is commonly prescribed.

This module challenges conventional beliefs and presents a NeuroPhysics-based understanding of why stretching may not achieve what it promises — and what should replace it.

“LMS” refers to the iCohere Learning Management System where the Program’s online education takes place.
